Jacob was a Civil War veteran. According to several of his grand daughters, he would go to the soldiers home when the going got rough and return to live with his daughter Violetta (Anne) Swain Swenson when times were better.
He reported to have had a tin cup shot out of his hand while bivouacked at Otterville, MO. His unit bivouacked at Ottervile, Missouril from 15 Oct 1861 until 25 Jan 1862.
