Buell Sherman Shaw

  General Notes:

He was born in the Oklahoma Territory. He does nothave a World War I draft card, I checked the National Archives inAtlanta, found out he had run away from home in Council Grove, Kansas (by family legend) he enlisted in TX and was underage. I have copies ofhis military records (somewhere). He served at least two years in theArmy and was in France. He was in the Occupation forces and got out asa Corporal. He joined the US Navy for two years, later joined the NavyReserve for 4 years. He became an ironworker and met my grandmotherMarion B. Ferguson in Philadelphia, PA. He worked a number ofconstruction jobs, including the Rockefeller Center. He is the 4th guyfrom the left of the famous photo of ironworkers having lunch on askyscraper. He left with family to help build the Esso refinery inAruba. They lived there 2 years. They returned to Kansas during thedepression and tried to make a living in the Council Grove area. Buelllater left to work a contractor job with the Navy in Hawaii. Hebasically abandoned the family and had another woman in Hawaii. My grandmother ended up getting a Mexican divorce and raised 3 kids putting them thru college. My mother has had little sympathy or dealings with her father as a result of this. Buell was at Pearl Harbor during the December 7th attack. Apparently even as a contractor he was in the yards and able to render assistance loading machine guns. There was a letter sent to him by President Truman (after the war), I've never seen it, but my aunt Virginia said she did. Again one has to weigh some of the war stories, but my grandfather was at Pearl Harbor on that day, so he is part of history.
