bullet  General Notes:

The life of George Shaw prior to the Civil War is very much a mystery. According to his obituary he immigrated to the USA at the age of one. That is the last piece of verifiable evidence until the Civil War. There is a record of a ship named Clio arriving May 1st 1832 with a George Shaw age 1 and a Mary Shaw age 23 on the manifest. The manifest is in cursive and barely legible so it is very uncertain that the information is accurate.

Kinsley Graphic, May 3, 1895 (Obituary)
George S. Shaw, aged 65 years, died at his home this city April 27th, 1895, at 10:30 o'clock. Mr. Shaw was born in Kent, England, February 15th, 1830, came to this country one year later and settled in York state; went to Illinois in 1818; enlisted in the late war July 21st, 1862 and was discharged June 12th, 1865, on account of total disability. Funeral services were conducted at the residence Monday afternoon by Rev.Winslow; and the old soldiers of the city being in attendance.During the charge up Lookout Mountain he received a gun shot wound which rendered him totally unfit to cope with life's battles as other of his fellow creature, but like a brave soldier, true patriot, he was little given to complaining¦.(the rest is filler material that had no information about George Shaw). Provided by Brett Osborn
(The obituary information provided by Brett shows George moving to Illinois in 1818 which cannot be correct. More than likely he moved to Illinois in 1848 or 1858.)

bullet  Research Notes:

George may have been married to a woman named Mary who was 23 in 1860 and had a child named George age 1 and an infant named Charles. 1860 censes Philadelphia, PA. This has not been confirmed however the time is consistent and no later children were named George or Charles.

There is a George Shaw, of the right age, on the manifest of the ship named Oliver which arrived at New York 20 Jul 1855. The ship came from Liverpool, England. The manifest list his occupation as a "mhitesmith". It is unlikely that this is our George Shaw because his obituary indicates that he came to the USA at age of one.
" I cannot find the source at present, but I remember that some family member had said his middle name was not S, this came from Civil War documentation and since George was seeking a pension he kept it. The original version I heard was his original name was George John Shaw. I have not found the letter that I got this information, nor have I ever been able to confirm it." (Brett Osborn, Descendant)
