On March 7, 1881, Ephraim Hoppes, a resident of Salem, Richardson County, NE, signed a DECLARATION FOR ORIGINAL INVALID PENSION stating that at the:
Battle of Cabin Creek, Cherokee Nation Indian Ty in October 1864 he was shot through right leg, ball entering out side of leg immediately below the calf ranging downward, going through killing his horse, which fell on his left leg & foot breaking the latter near the ankle joint. That he was treated in hospitals as follows: Field Hospital on battle ground about three days, Fort Scott Kansas about a month, thence to Fort Smith, Arkansas and remained till about Christmas 1864, thence to Ozark Arkansas, thence to Pine Bluff, Arks, thence to Fort Gibson and discharged. . . That since leaving the service this applicant has resided at Salem, Richardson Co., in the State of Nebraska except for 1 year at Biglow, Holt County, Mo., and his occupation has been that of a farmer. That prior to his entry into the service above named he was a man of good, sound, physical health, being when enrolled a farmer. That he is now 2/3 disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his injuries . . . .

September 14, 1916

Ephriam Hoppes was born on the 18th day of December, 1845 in Madison County, Indiana, and died on the 27th day of August, 1916 at the Solider s' Home, Leavenworth, Kansas. He came west with his parents at the age of five years to Richardson county, Nebraska, and moved to Norton county, Kansas in the spring of 1886, where he lived for a number of years. He was married to Martha Helling, December 4, 1874. To this union ten children were born. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, four sons: Henry, Daniel, James and Manley, and two daughters, Mary DePuy and Sarah Shirley.

The funeral was preached by Rev. A. J. Wertenberger, and interment was made in the Maple Grove cemetery in the Colony.

Mr. Hoppes was a kind and loving husband, a fond parent and was highly respected by all his friends and neighbors.
